CareerUp handles your resume, which is one of the more sensitive documents you own. This page says plainly what is stored, where it goes, and how to get rid of it.
What is stored
- Account — name, email, hashed password. Passwords are hashed, never stored in a readable form.
- Resume — the extracted text, plus the skills, education and experience read from it. Each stored skill keeps the line of your resume it came from, so the app can always show why it thinks you have it.
- Prep spaces — the roles you are pursuing, their job descriptions, your status, follow-up dates, notes, generated cover letters and bullet suggestions.
- Interview sessions — the full transcript of practice interviews and their assessments.
- Uploads — resume and avatar files are stored on Cloudinary.
Where your data goes
Text is sent to AI providers to generate cover letters, interview turns, explanations and course suggestions:
- Groq (primary) and Google Gemini (fallback when Groq is rate-limited)
- Only what a feature needs is sent. Match-score explanations, for example, receive the already-computed skill lists — not your resume.
- Your name and email are not included in prompts unless a feature genuinely needs them, such as signing a cover letter.
Job searches query public job boards (RemoteOK, Remotive, Himalayas, Arbeitnow, Adzuna, Jooble) using your search terms. Your resume is never sent to them — matching happens on our side. Role-demand charts query Google Trends with the role name only.
What is never done
- Your resume is never shown to employers or other users.
- Nothing is sold, and no data is shared for advertising.
- No application is submitted on your behalf without your action.
- Every endpoint holding personal data requires authentication — there are no public URLs exposing resumes.
The browser extension
The optional extension reads a job posting only when you click its button — it does not watch your browsing. Your access token is kept in the extension's own storage and is readable only by its background worker, never by the websites you visit. Autofill runs locally in your browser; the page you are filling is not sent anywhere.
Retention and deletion
Data is kept while your account exists. You can delete individual prep spaces from the dashboard at any time, which removes their transcripts, letters and notes. To delete your whole account and everything attached to it, contact the team — deletion is permanent and not recoverable.
Sample versus live data
Some job listings come from a bundled sample dataset rather than a live board. These carry a Sample badge everywhere they appear. Salary benchmarks are computed from that sample set and labelled as such; Google Trends data is labelled Live.
Project status
CareerUp is a hackathon project, not a company. It runs on free tiers and may be shut down after the event, at which point its database would be deleted. Keep your own copy of anything you would be sorry to lose.
